The CMHC, the Canadian Housing Bubble & our "Good Banks" myth
May 04, 2012
UPDATE: See FP article (business.financialpost.com Apparently, the banks are approaching the CMHC and paying the insurance cost themselves for loans with MORE than 20% down payment! Show's that they think the CMHC does not charge enough.... smart on banks but as a taxpayer makes me furious. About the CMHC: It's really just common sense...take away risk and of course banks will make more loans, pushing up housing prices higher than they otherwise would be. And when the bubble bursts, it'll be bursting from higher levels. Let's hope the CMHC knows what it's doing, having guaranteed some $500bn of Canada's riskiest mortgages — roughly equal to Canada's entire national debt. And the minister responsible for the CMHC? Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. But don't worry — she has an MBA!

Editorial: Barrow builders shouldn't get home-size break
Last year, it was 1,350 square feet. This year, it's 1,200 square feet. And if the economy doesn't improve quickly enough to suit residential developers in Barrow County, who's to say that next year it won't be 1,000 square feet?
